A day trip from Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou begins with a drive of about one hour and a half through the Atlas Mountains. Along the way, we first stop at a viewpoint where you can use the restroom, stretch your legs, drink Moroccan mint tea, and take photos of the mountains and villages. Moreover, this short break helps you relax before going higher into the Atlas Mountains, and it is your first chance to enjoy the views.
Afterwards, we continue the drive and soon reach the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest road in Morocco. From here you can see valleys, mountains, and small Berber villages. In addition, the scenery changes as we go down toward Ouarzazate. Consequently, every turn of the road brings new colors and landscapes that make the journey exciting.
Next, we arrive in Ouarzazate, also called the Hollywood of Morocco, where many movies such as Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones were filmed. Here you may visit the Atlas Cinema Studios to see old sets and props, and also explore the Kasbah of Taourirt, a historic fortress that shows traditional Moroccan life. Therefore, this stop offers both cinema history and local culture before we continue.
Then we move on to the highlight of the day, Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This ancient village of mud bricks is one of the most famous in Morocco. Furthermore, you can walk through the narrow streets, discover traditional houses, and climb to the top for wide panoramas over the valley. As a result, many visitors say that a day trip from Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou is one of the best experiences.
At lunchtime, we stop in a local restaurant near the kasbah to enjoy Moroccan food such as tagine or couscous. Finally, in the afternoon, the return journey takes us through Telouet and the Ounila Valley, a quiet road with villages, green valleys, and natural views. In the evening, we arrive back in Marrakech.
